Incoming freshman Layshia Clarendon wins gold with Team USA

Incoming freshman Layshia Clarendon won a gold medal as a member of Team USA at the 2009 FIBA World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
Team USA dropped their first game in the opening round of pool play, 90-86, to Spain. The team swept through the remainder of pool play and through the quarterfinals, and semifinals to face a rematch with Spain in the championship, a rematch won by the United States, 87-71, giving the American team its third straight gold at the FIBA Under-19 Championships.
Clarendon, a WBCA High School All-American and a member of the Parade Magazine High School All-American fourth team, was named one of 14 finalists for the U-19 team after the initial training camp and tryouts in May, making the final 12-player roster in July. She played in eight of the nine games, averaging 4.5 points per game and 1.5 rebounds per game in 13.4 minutes of playing time per contest.
The 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship featured 16 national teams comprised of athletes 19-years-old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1990) that qualified through their FIBA zone tournaments.
