Valerie Arioto Leads USA Softball to Gold at Japan Cup

Aug. 3, 2009

California Golden Bear Valerie Arioto was part of the USA Softball squad that earned the gold medal at the Japan Cup in Sendai City. The United States squad swept through the tournament, winning all four of their games in the tournament.

The American team opened the tournament with a 11-2 victory over Australia. USA Softball went on to earn a 10-2 victory over Chinese Taipei and 6-1 over Japan to move into the gold medal game with a 3-0 record. In the medal game, the Americans defeated the host Japanese team, 2-0, to sweep through the tournament.

Arioto had an RBI in the first meeting against Japan, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in the first run of the game. Arioto also hit a solo home run against Chinese Taipei.

The Japan Cup squad is one of three national teams representing the United States in international competition this summer. With the win in Japan, the USA has now won three summer events, Canada Cup, World Cup and Japan Cup, and is 22-0 for the three events. The team is also currently undefeated at the 2009 Pan American Qualifier in Maracay, Venezuela. The Japan Cup is the lone competition that Arioto and the rest of her team will be competing in.
