Wildcats Compete in the U.S. Open

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Members of the Arizona swimming and diving team remain hard at work this summer as several swimmers on both the men’s and women’s team descended upon Federal Way, Wash. for the U.S. Open Swimming Championships.

Rising senior Jack Brown led Arizona in the water Wednesday night as he won Gold in the men’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:12.58. Brown’s time was good for a new U.S. Open Meet record.  In the men’s 100 free, Jordan Smith finished fourth with a 49.62 finish. Smith moved up two spots in the final heat after finishing sixth in the morning prelims.

Bryan O’Connor finished fifth overall in the men’s 200m backstroke with a time of 2:00.56. Brown withdrew from the finals of the 200 back after posting a fourth place time in prelims. Transfer Hannah Ross finished seventh in the 200 back on the women’s side.

To cap the day, the Arizona team of Leo Vorster, Lara Jackson, Whitney Myers and Genny Konicke won the women’s 4 x100 free relay with a time of 3:43.88. The women’s team was nearly three seconds faster than the second place finisher.  The men’s team of Adam Small, Jordan Smith, Jack Brown and Nick Hadinger finished third in the men’s 400 free relay.

On Tuesday in the Pacific Northwest, Brown led the Cats with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke. A.J. Tipton finished seventh overall in the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.32. Wildcat distance swimmer Susana Helms placed eighth overall in the women’s 800 free with an 8:44.63 showing.

13 current or former Wildcats wrapped up participation in the 13th World Championships on Sunday. Lacey Nymeyer and Alyssa Anderson both earned silver medals for their efforts on the U.S. 800 free relay team. Former Wildcat Albert Subirats had the highest individual finish with fourth place in the men’s 100-meter butterfly.

Arizona swimmers will continue with U.S. Open events through Saturday evening.
