Lua Advances to Semifinals at USWAm

Aug. 7, 2009

Incoming freshman Tiffany Lua advanced to the semifinals of the 109th U.S. Woman's Amateur Championship Friday at Old Warson CC in St. Louis.

Lua is the last remaining player of five Bruins who competed in America's oldest women's amateur event. Teammate Stephanie Kono fell in the quarterfinals to USC's Jennifer Song.

Now Lua will have to deal with Song in the semifinals on Saturday.

The 18-year old Rowland Heights native defeated 16-year old Jessica Korda, 3&2. Lua never trailed and held a 4-up lead at the turn.

'I was fortunate enough to get a few gifts from her in the beginning to give me the early lead, and that helped a lot,' said Lua.

She lost holes when Korda birdied the 10th, and when Lua bogeyed the 13th, her lead was just two. Lua made a par at the difficult 420-yard 15th and Korda bogeyed it to go three down with four to play. The players halved the 16th and Lua had won her fourth match of the week.

Against Song, Kono led twice (1-up) on the front side, but couldn't get untracked on the inward nine. Kono dropped three straight holes to open the back side and Song went ahead 2-up with a par at the 11th. The players halved the next three holes before Kono won the 16th with a par. But her bogey at the 211-yard 17th gave the match to Song.
