Eleven Bruins Named Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars

Eleven UCLA Bruins have been named 2009 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars. Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the award in 1992 to honor undergraduate students who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. In addition to athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism. To be included, students must compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses on in their communities.

Ashe earned All-America honors at UCLA and was te first African American to win the NCAA singles title.

Four Bruins - Allison Taka of the women's basketball team, Tiffany Joh from women's golf and Mizuki Sato and Nicole Tom, both from the women's gymnastics squad - were named to the first team. Five Bruins were named to the second team, one to the third team and one was honorable mention.
