Women Of Troy Open Fall Camp
Aug. 10, 2009
LOS ANGELES -- Monday was the start of the 2009 fall camp for the USC women's volleyball program. Head coach Mick Haley returns 13 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 17-12 overall, losing just one starter.
'It's a much different team in the gym,' said Haley. 'The returning players had a much different attitude the first day than last year, much more disciplined and focused. There was great leadership and work ethic. As long as they keep working, we will be pretty good.'
Haley credits the team's win at the 2009 Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in April for the positive change.
'I think the beach championship certainly buoyed their confidence,' said Haley. 'I think as a whole the team wanted last fall back. They felt like they didn't have their heads in the right place and missed a great opportunity. You know you can't go back so they are really putting their focus into this season. I think our attitude should be to get better every single day because by the end of the season, this could be a really special team.'
Senior All-America outside hitter Jessica Gysin, who received a sixth year of eligibility after missing her first two years due to injuries, sees the changes in the team as well.
'I think we have a new mentality,' said Gysin. 'The chemistry that we built over the spring has carried over to the fall along with adding our three new freshmen and (junior transfer setter) Kelly Irvin. It's so much more positive and we are having fun out here.'
'I'm excited to be back for a sixth year. It's been a long time, but I couldn't ask for a better situation. Being able to be an older player and guiding the way for the younger players is fun, but a big responsibility.'
USC opens the 2009 season at the MSU Showcase in East Lansing, Mich., (August 28-29) and will face host Michigan State, along with North Carolina and Albany.
