Opener Three Weeks Away

Aug. 15, 2009

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz.--The University of Arizona football team completes the physical part of its training camp here today with a morning practice and an evening scrimmage at nearby Buena High School in Sierra Vista.

UA's 2009 season opener at home in Arizona Stadium against Central Michigan is three short weeks away on Sept. 5. The Cats will finish preseason camp with a week of work in Tucson, then switch into a regular-season schedule when fall classes begin Aug. 24.

At Friday night's dinner on post at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center, the team was briefed in a guest speaker appearance by Sgt. Maj. Dennis Roberts, a military intelligence trainer at the fort. Roberts outlined his work and provided some contrast in detailing what soldiers and their leadership go through in building espirit de corps and solid teamwork.

UA practices at 8:30 a.m. on the Warrior/Sentinel Fields and then will scrimmage at BHS at 5:30 p.m. The scrimmage is open to the public. All practices on the post have had a number of observers from Fort Huachuca's various communications and intelligence units, from Gen. John Custer down through the enlisted ranks.

On Sunday the team will go through a Leadership Reaction Course and Combat Simulation exercise before wrapping up camp with other meetings. The group departs for Tucson Monday morning.
