Late Goal Gives Huskies 2-2 Draw In Exhibition
Aug. 19, 2009
SEATTLE - A pair of freshmen hooked up for a late goal in the 83rd minute to help the Washington men's soccer team pull even for a 2-2 tie with the Seattle Wolves in an exhibition Wednesday at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies led 1-0 after halftime but the Wolves came back to score two goals in the span of less than two minutes to take the lead early in the second half. But Quinton Beasley headed in a pass from Ryan Moore to tie the match with less than eight minutes remaining and the game was called a tie after regulation.
Senior Daniel Phelps kicked off the scoring for the Huskies in the 24th minute, driving a shot into the back of the net to give UW the early lead. Fellow senior Rylan Hawkins and the Husky defense kept the Wolves - a local semi-pro team - off the board in the first half to preserve the lead.
After mass substitutions by the Huskies just before the 60th minute saw six new players take the field, the Wolves took advantage of UW's youth and scored twice immediately to take the lead. Pedro Batres blasted an unassisted shot from the left side into the upper right corner of the net to tie the game and 84 seconds later, Alex Chursky scored on a header from inside the box off a corner kick to stun the Huskies.
But the Husky unit full of freshmen slowly took back control of the game and managed to take advantage of one of their late opportunities to escape with a draw.
'I was overall very pleased,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'We played everybody and that's a key factor. The Wolves are an experienced team, they have a number of ex-pros, so I'm pleased they put together a strong lineup. The first part of the game we dictated the play a lot which was nice to see. I was proud of that young group that went on and they lost the lead with two goals real quick but came back to tie it. We've gone eight straight practices at a pretty good tilt so this is a step along the way. There were a lot of positives and we'll go forward and get a lot better.'
The Huskies will next host Trinity Western in their final exhibition tune-up on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 4 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
