Aug. 19, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team kicks off the 2009 season this weekend as the Beavers host Portland State on Friday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the match at Paul Lorenz Field is free.
'Needless to say, everyone is excited about getting the season underway,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'We have had a good set of practices to start off the year and it's exciting to start the season against a strong team like Portland State. Toss in the fact that they are an in-state school and it should be an exciting match.'
The meeting marks the 12th in the series between the two schools as Oregon State holds an 8-3-1 advantage in the series after a 2-1 win over the Vikings last season.
Oregon State returns ten starters from last year's squad that finished with a record of 6-11-2 on the season as senior forward Najma Homidi returns after leading the Beavers in scoring with four goals and nine points.
Senior Rachael Axon, an all-conference selection last year, also returns for Oregon State as the midfielder scored two goals while adding an assist in 2008.
On the defensive side of the ball, goalkeeper Colleen Boyd returns after a strong freshman season where she posted a 1.16 goals against average while appearing in 17 contests.
Portland State returns eight starters and 12 letter-winners from a team that finished the year with a 5-11-4 mark.
