Former USC Baseball Player Calvin Barnes Passes Away At Age 88

LOS ANGELES -- Services for the late USC baseball player Calvin Barnes will take place on Thursday (Aug. 27) in Bakersfield, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Barnes, who passed away recently at the age of 88, played for the Trojans from 1940-42 and was a two-time all-conference selection.
As an outfielder, Barnes earned All-CIBA second team honors in 1941 and All-CIBA first team honors in 1942. He graduated from USC in 1949 with a degree in mathematics and a minor in engineering after enlisting in the Army Air Force for three years.
The service, which is open to the public, will be held at Kern River Family Mortuary Chapel (1900 North Chester Ave., Bakersfield). A veteran's service will be held the same day at 2:00 p.m. at the Bakersfield National Cemetery (corner of Hwy 58 and Hwy 223, 22 miles east of Bakersfield).
He is survived by his wife, Esther of 63 years, sister Barbara Judd of Bakersfield, 2 daughters, Allison Coleman and Leslie Troncale, and granddaughter, Alyssa Marie Coleman. Calvin was a star athlete in high school days at Excelsior High School in Bellflower.
