U.S. Amateur Blog: Just missing the cut
Aug. 26, 2009
Note: Spencer Fletcher blogged from the U.S. Amateur this week as he just missed the cut.
What a difference a day makes. After struggling mightily yesterday I was able to shoot 71 at Cedar Ridge Country Club. I was able to keep the ball in the fairway and then advance it successfully to the green. It is much easier to make birdies on the putting surface than to try and hole out a bunker shot.
I bogeyed the 513 yard par 4 first hole which wasn't too frustrating, seeing as it was the hardest hole on the course. I bounced back very nicely though and birdied the second and third holes. I finished the front nine at even par and birdied the eleventh to go one under again. I continued along at that score until the par 3 15th. The hole is 234 yards long with water all down the left and into the wind. I pulled my 3-iron right into the water and made double bogey, which probably ended any chance I had of making the 36 hole cut. I did par the last three holes all of which are difficult to end at 71 which was one of the better scores of the day.
Unfortunately the damage had been done the first day and it would have been a very difficult mountain to climb. The cut for match play has fallen at 8 over par. 27 contestants will have to play off for 4 spots at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Tristan and Jesper came so close, both finishing at 9 over par. I'm sure they can both think of many shots they could have saved over the two days that would have gotten them through.
This has been an amazing experience, the members and staff at Southern Hills has been so nice and accommodating the entire week. It's always a great learning experience to play such a good golf course under hard conditions, it shows you what you need to work on and how you can get better. I look forward to next year the tournament will be at Chambers Bay CC in Seattle Washington. I plan on writing throughout match play next year. Thank you.
