Are You Ready For Husky Game Day?
Aug. 28, 2009
SEATTLE - Some of the great memories associated with Husky football haven't always been formed by what has taken place on the field. From the rabid, purple-clad fan base, to the beautiful scenic view of Lake Washington and the Cascade mountain range: Football game day at Washington is like no other.
Since he was hired, new coach Steve Sarkisian has been quick to embrace the traditions of Washington football, while adding a few new twists in helping shape the game day atmosphere at Husky Stadium.
The most noticeable event that will make its debut on Saturday will be The Zone: a FREE day-long pre-game 'tailgate' style rally that will take place in the East Practice Field, adjacent to Husky Stadium.
Accessible from outside the South side of the stadium beginning at 1 p.m., The Zone will feature a variety of food and beverage (both alcoholic and non- alcoholic) options, music provided by KUBE 93, large-screen televisions that will display regional and national games of interest and a special Kids Zone. Elliott's Oyster House, Metropolitan Grill and Wing Dome will provide food available for sale.
The Zone will also feature custom tailgating suites for entertaining corporate clients, associates and friends in a first-class setting and staging for 950 KJR AM's live pre-game radio show with Dave Mahler, Dick Baird and Hugh Millen. When the team arrives to the stadium, it will conduct a special pre-game walk through The Zone - giving fans a chance to show their support. Husky cheerleaders, mascot, band and a variety of former players will all make appearances throughout the season.
Replacing what was formerly called the 'Husky Huddle' and the 'Fifth Quarter' that was held in the Dempsey Indoor, The Zone will also be open to the public for approximately two hours following each game.
The Pregame Siren
Since 1921, a siren has sounded after every Washington score. Managed by the Husky Band, this year the siren will also sound 20 minutes prior to each game - giving Husky fans a call to come into the stadium. One of Coach Sarkisian's requests is that fans enter the stadium early, be loud and cheer the Huskies as they exit the tunnel onto the field.
Husky fans will notice the UW players decked-out in newly-designed uniforms. A bit of a throwback to previous eras, the new uniforms feature block numbers and a deeper and more distinct gold color pants with purple and white stripes down the side. Fans can also purchase a replica Nike jersey in the Husky Team Shop - located throughout the stadium.
Making his debut on Saturday will be the UW's newest Husky mascot, Dubs. The University of Washington's 13th live mascot, Dubs is an Alaskan Malamute born in November, 2008 and will lead the team onto the field and show his support throughout the year. You can read more about Dubs by visiting his page GoHuskies.com.
Fans visiting Husky Stadium will also notice a new beverage sponsor for UW Athletics - Coca-Cola. Every Husky concession area (as well as The Zone) will feature a variety of Coke products throughout the season.
