SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Cat Highmark's 30 assists and 18 digs helped fuel the ASU Volleyball Team Saturday as they took their first win of the season 3-2 over the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Sun Devils took a 25-17, 25-20, 20-25, 16-25 and 15-7 win to push their record to an even 1-1 on the year.
The first set saw Sofie Schlagintweit jump in to tack two kills and five blocks on the board against the Bearcats while freshman Erica Wilson stepped into the rotation to collect three kills and two blocks as ASU held the line with seven blocks in the set to take a 25-17 win from the Bearcats.
The second set saw an offensive surge from Cincinnati who posted 13 kills but A State was able to hold off the Bearcats as Sarah Reaves collected three kills, two blocks and an ace to lead the Sun Devils to a 25-20 win to take the 2-0 lead into the break.
Set three saw the Bearcats surge again as they put 16 kills on the board but Cat Highmark stepped in to quarterback the Sun Devils as she put up eight assists in the set and one block to keep the Sun Devils in it. ASU was unable to take the sweep though as Cincinnati took the set 25-20
Cincinnati stepped up again in the fourth set as they came out swinging to put 17 kills on the board. While Sofie Schlagintweit put three kills, a block and an ace up for ASU, the effort wasn't enough as Stephanie Neimer's seven kills led the Bearcats to another win, taking a 25-16 victory to tie it up at 2-2 and send it to five.
In the final set saw both teams put up six kills apiece, but ASU's defense gave them the edge as Erica Wilson came in to post three blocks and a kill while Malia Marquardt put up two blocks as well as two kills to push ASU ahead with a 15-7 win.
After the match, Head Coach Jason Watson stated, 'I felt we were able to upgrade our defense. We play a slightly more disciplined way - which was reflected in our blocking.
'We have some offensive work to do. Much of that is upon me. Once we've found a line-up that provides us with much needed focus and intensity, we'll see an improved offensive effort'
The Sun Devils will close out the Utah Classic later today as they take on UC Irvine at 5 p.m. MT.
