Perk, Stephens Named To U.S. U-20 World Cup Roster

Aug. 30, 2009

UCLA seniors Brian Perk and Michael Stephens were selected to the final 21-man roster that will represent the U.S. at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt from Sept. 24-Oct. 16. UCLA ranks first (tied with Notre Dame) amongst collegiate squads with two players on the team.

This will be Perk's second U-20 World Cup. He was a backup in 2007 and earned a Round of 16 win against Uruguay that sent the U.S. to the quarterfinals. This year for the U-20s, he has allowed just one goal in seven international games for a 0.14 goals against average and six shutouts.

Stephens is one of four players on the final squad who did not participate in CONCACAF qualifying. He impressed in his summer showings with the U-20s, scoring a goal in consecutive games against Costa Rica in May. He previously played with the U.S. at the 2007 Pan American Games.

Freshman Amobi Okugo was part of the 30-man roster that was considered for the squad but was not ultimately selected.

The U.S. team will depart for Larnaca, Cyprus, on Sept. 14 and play a final tune-up against Australia before traveling to Suez, Egypt, on Sept. 21. The U.S. will open against Germany on Sept. 26 before facing Cameroon on Sept. 29 and rounding out group play against Korea Republic on Oct. 2. All three of the USA's group matches will be played at the brand new Mubarak Stadium in Suez.

Each game of the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup will be shown live on the ESPN family of networks with Galavision also broadcasting all three U.S. group games. The first U.S. game will be shown live on ESPN Classic, at 6:55 a.m. PT, while Galavision will also broadcast the game at 9:55 a.m. ET/PT. The remaining two group games for the U.S. will be shown live on ESPN2 and on tape delay on Galavision.

With Perk and Stephens being selected to the team, UCLA now has 18 players who have participated in the last seven Under-20 World Cups.
