The Pac-10 sported a 24-6 (.800) record in the opening weekend of competition and will look to continue its winning ways this week as tournament action continues... CALIFORNIA will need to turn it up a notch this weekend as the Golden Bears travel to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic where they will face No. 2 Texas, No. 19 Saint Louis and No. 4 Hawai’i...  Six Pac-10 teams continue to be ranked among the AVCA Preseason Top 25 - No. 3 WASHINGTON, No. 9 UCLA, No. 10 California, No. 11 STANFORD, No. 14 OREGON and No. 16 USC. WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA outside hitter Tiffany Owens has been named the Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Aug. 24-30, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.


The San Bernardino, Calif., native earned MVP honors at the Louisville Tournament after leading the Wildcats to victories over Louisville, Belmont and Pittsburgh. 


For the tournament, Owens posted 39 kills (3.90 kps) and a hitting percentage of .344. She tallied 17 kills and 14 digs while hitting .368 against Pittsburgh. The win over Pitt clinched the tournament for the ‘Cats. 


This is the second weekly honor for Owens, and Arizona’s 27th Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time.

• Tournament honors all around... Three players earned MVP honors at their respective tournaments - ARIZONA JR OH Tiffany Owens at the Louisville Tournament (3.90 kps/.344/2.80 dps/0.50 bps), OREGON SR OH Sonja Newcombe at the Oregon Classic (3.33 kps/.343/2.78 dps/0.78 bps), WASHINGTON STATE SR MB Cassie Robbins at the Nike Cougar Invitational (2.64 kps/.373/1.18 bps). In addition to the MVP honorees, 19 other student-athletes earned all-tournament honors at their respective tournaments last weekend - ARIZ (Dana Hutchinson, Paige Webber), ASU (Paige Mittelstaedt), CAL (Hana Cutura, Carli Lloyd), ORE (Nevena Djordjevic, Netecia Enesi, Heather Meyers), OSU (Rachel Rourke, Jill Sawatzky), STAN (Gabi Ailes, Cassidy Lichtman), UCLA (Lauren Cook, Amanda Gill), USC (Alex Jupiter, Kimmee Roleder), WSU (Jackie Albright, Renee Bordelon, Brittany Tillman).


• Coaching Milestone... Washington coach Jim McLaughlin posted his 200th victory at the helm of the Huskies. Currently, he’s the fifth Pac-10 coach to amass 200 wins at his respective institution. California coach Rich Feller is not far behind in expanding that group to six as he sits on 193 wins with the Golden Bears.


• After getting off to a slow start, posting a 7-3 record on the first day of competition, the Pac-10 rebounded to post a 24-6 (.800) record in the opening weekend. Arizona and Washington State each duplicated last season’s perfect start with a pair of 3-0 records... Oregon continues to roll in non-conference action under coach Jim Moore. In five seasons under Moore, the Ducks are 47-3 (.940) in non-conference regular season play.
