Trojans Compete In US Open Debut

Sept. 3, 2009

USC sophomore Daniel Nguyen and freshman J.T. Sundling put a scare into the 2008 U.S. Open semifinalists from Argentina in their 2009 U.S. Open doubles first-round match on Thursday (Sept. 3) in New York before falling to the veterans from Argentina.

Nguyen, a key member of USC's 2009 NCAA Championships team, and Sundling, who earned their berth into the U.S. Open after winning the USTA Boys' 18s National Hard Court Championships, got up a break and went on to take the first set from Maximo Gonzalez and Juan Monaco, 6-3.

But Gonzalez and Monaco, long-time veterans of the men's tour, rallied to sweep the remaining two sets 6-2 and 6-1 to knock out the Trojan tandem.
