Cougar Baseball Downs Alumni

Sept. 5, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - Matt Argyropoulos hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and the Washington State baseball team defeated the Cougar Alumni 6-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

The blast by Argyropoulos broke a 1-1 tie and came off starting and losing pitcher Rip Ramsey (1990-91). Ramsey worked three innings and threw 32 of his 48 pitches for strikes.

The Alumni took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mike Kinkade (1992-95), who spent part of six seasons in the big leagues, homered over the left field wall on a 3-2 pitch from Richie Ochoa.

The Cougars tied the game 1-1 in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Cody Bartlett. In the third, Travis Coulter opened with a single and was cut down going to third on a Derek Jones single prior to the blast by Argyropoulos.

In the fourth, Brady Steiger and Kyle Johnson were issued back-to-back, two-out walks. After Tommy Richards reached on an error to load the bases, Patrick Claussen bounced a two-run single through the left side for a 5-1 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Jason Freeman (2004-05) led off with a walk for the Alumni and moved to second on a ground out by Collin Henderson (2002-04). Kinkade, who finished 3-for-3, followed with a double into the left-center field gap to make the score 5-2.

After an out was recorded on a fielder's choice, Jeff Miller (2004-07) singled and Zach Borba (2007) reached on an error to load the bases. The threat tied when Zach Franklin (2002, 2004-06) flied out to end the inning.

The Cougars batted in the bottom of the seventh despite having the game wrapped up, and added a run. Claussen led off with a double and scored two batters later on a single by Brett Jacobs.

Led by the three hits from Kinkade, the Alumni collected eight safeties total. Jeff Miller was 2-for-3, his brother Jay (2003-06) was 1-for-2, Nick Hall (2005-07) was 1-for-2 with a triple and Borba was 1-for-3 with a stolen base.

For the Cougars, Claussen was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, Jones was 2-for-2, Coulter, Matt Fanelli, Jacobs, and J.K. Dykes were 1-for-2.
