Murakami Wins Women's 5k Race At BYU Autumn Cross Country Classic

Junior Shannon Murakami won the women's 5k race at the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah on Saturday morning to open up the 2009 cross country season. The Bruin women placed third as a team, while BYU won the women's team title.

Murakami emphatically won the race, crossing the finish line nearly 30 seconds before her nearest competitor with a winning time of 17:59.2. Sophomore Katja Goldring finished in eighth-place as UCLA's No. 2 runner (18:4.5), while junior Kelcie Wiemann was 11th in the No. 3 spot (18:53.4).

Freshman Heather Balbier (13th, 19:03.9) and junior Rosa Magana (17th, 19:16.5) rounded out the top five runners for the Bruins.

The Bruins will next head to Mammoth for high altitude training before resuming competition September 26 in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the Lobo Invitational.
