Men's Soccer Shuts Out Cal State Bakersfield, 4-0

Sept. 6, 2009

Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team shut out the Roadrunners of Cal State Bakersfield 4-0, thanks to two goals apiece by Colin Mitchell and Danny Mwanga in the final game of the OSU/Nike Challenge Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.

'You really wanted to start it off that way and get the 2009 campaign off on the right foot,' first year head coach Steve Simmons said following the victory.

Mwanga scored the first of his two goals of the contest and season on an unassisted goal past the diving CSUB keeper. Mitchell picked up his first goal of his career on a header goal on a cross from Brian Ramsey. Both goals came against keeper Eric Shannon and were only 30 seconds apart in the 16th minute of the first half.

Oregon State (2-0-0) took a 2-0 lead into the half.

CSUB (1-2-0) brought in a new goalie in Shane Ascheri to start the second half but it did not phase the Beavers. Mitchell added his second goal 14 minutes into the second half when he headed in the ball by out jumpingAscheri one-on-one.

Mitchell ended the game with 2 goals, 3 shots, and 2 shots being on goal in only 49 minutes.

Mwanga added his second goal 13 minutes later on a lob shot over the leaping goalie. He ended the game with 4 shots, 3 shots on goal, and 2 goals in 59 minutes.

The four goals in the game make it seven for the season in only two games this season. The Beavers scored only 19 goals in 19 last year.

CSUB only managed four shots in the game, one of which was on the goal and was saved by Oregon State goalie Steve Spangler.

The Beavers hit the road as they travel to Spokane, Wash. to take on Gonzaga Tuesday Sept. 8. They will stay in Spokane and take on Detroit Mercy and Georgia Southern next weekend at the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic.

'We're going to play a Gonzaga team at their place who is really good.' Simmons said. 'That will be a very good test for this team.'
