Ohio State Dives Past USC For Win On Penalty Kick

Sept. 6, 2009

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The USC women's soccer team fell prey to the referee's whistle late in the game against Ohio State today at the USD Nike Classic at Torero Stadium. In the 79th minute, the Buckeyes were awarded a penalty kick when an Ohio State striker stumbled in the box. The Women of Troy got stuck with a 1-0 loss, moving USC to 1-3 overall on the year.

The Trojans boasted the superior ball movement in the game and created a number of opportunities, although the Buckeyes had the advantage on corner kicks in the match. The USC front lines buzzed around the Ohio State back to keep pressure on. Samantha Johnson caused almost constant trouble for the Buckeye back line, and got loose for a dangerous chance in the 70th minute. She left one Ohio State defender in her wake at the corner and charged for goal, but appeared to be held back from her shot attempt by another Buckeye back. No whistle came, and the chance was cleared out.

The controversial game-winner goal would come after a costly whistle at the other end of the field not 10 minutes later. Ohio State's Lauren Granberg took the ball deep and went one-on-one with USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen. Olsen charge out to smother the ball and managed to force the ball to roll wide right of the face of the goal. With Olsen still on the ground, Granberg followed with a stumble to the turf. Olsen was whistled for the penalty. While lining up to defend the penalty kick on goal, Olsen discussed the call with the referee and linesman, and was then dealt a red card and removed from the game. USC backup goalkeeper Brittany Massro came in to face the penalty kick, but could not stop the strike from Ohio State's Cassie Dickerson. That gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 advantage in the 79th minute. The Trojans worked hard to get an equalizer in the remaining time, but came up empty and were left with the tough road loss.

The Trojans will now return home to McAlister Field for two matches next weekend. USC will face Gonzaga in a 3 p.m. game on Friday (Sept. 11) and then goes up against Michigan at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 13).
