Volleyball Hosts Nike Cougar Challenge

COUGAR VOLLEYBALL HOSTS NIKE COUGAR CHALLENGE: The Washington State volleyball team (7-0) hosts the Nike Cougar Challenge Tournament this weekend in Bohler Gym...Friday, Sept. 11, WSU plays Cal State Northridge (2-4) at 1 p.m. and Idaho (4-2) at 7:30 p.m...Saturday, Sept. 12 Idaho takes on Cal State Northridge at 1 p.m. and WSU plays CS Northridge again at 7 p.m...ADMISSION TO THE TOURNAMENT IS FREE.
BORDELON NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cougar senior Renee Bordelon (Coeur d'Alene) was named the Pacific-10 Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for Aug. 31-Sept. 7, after earning MVP honors at Utah Valley Invite...led WSU to three sweeps, including an upset victory over Missouri, No. 17 Utah, and Utah Valley...WSU also defeated Weber State, 3-0 Monday evening...led the WSU offense to a combined .311 hitting percentage in the four victories, including a School Record .478 attack percentage in the win over Utah...for the week, Bordelon tallied 153 assists (12.75 assists per set), 11 kills and four service aces...in upset win over No. 17 Utah, registered 36 assists and five kills...this is the first weekly honor of Bordelon, WSU's 20th Pac-10 Player of the Week and the first time a Cougar has been honored since Sept. 15, 2003, when Zanda Bautre was selected.
COUGAR COACHING STAFF: Head Coach Andrew Palileo is in his second season at WSU after a highly successful tenure at South Dakota State...Palileo has a 17-19 overall record at WSU, and a 13-year career record of 247-160...associate head coach Brian Lamppa and assistant coach TeAna Tramel complete the coaching staff...Kara Kiefer is the coordinator of operations for 2009.
COUGS WIN UTAH VALLEY La QUINTA INN & SUITES INVITE: Washington State won the Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invite last weekend, defeating Missouri (3-0), No. 17 Utah (3-0) and Utah Valley (3-0) in Orem...WSU senior setter Renee Bordelon was named MVP of the tournament and freshman Oceana Bush was named the top libero...junior MB Brittany Tillman and freshman RS Rachel Todorovich were also named to the all-tourney team, joining UVU's Camie Manwill and Allyce Jones, Utah's Chelsey Sandberg, and Missouri's Julianna Klein...WSU opened the season by winning the Nike Cougar Invitational in Pullman.
NATIONAL RANKINGS MEAN TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR COUGS: The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Div. I Coaches Top 25 Poll for Sept. 7, has seven WSU's opponents ranked in the top 17...all are Pac-10 schools so the Cougs will play each twice...the conference teams include Washington No. 3, UCLA No. 8, Stanford No. 10, Oregon No. 12, California No. 13, and USC No. 15, Arizona No. 25...Utah was ranked No. 17 when Washington State swept the Utes Sept. 5...also receiving votes in this week's poll is Washington State (No. 43)...last WSU Top 25 poll listing was 2003 preseason (ranked 19th)...for the weekly poll, go to www.avca.org.

WSU HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SEPT. 18: All-American Keri Killebrew is one of seven to be inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame Sept. 18 in Pullman...led coach Cindy Fredrick's 1990-91-92 volleyball teams, including a first-ever NCAA tournament bid in 1991...became the Cougar's first volleyball All-American in 1992 after leading her team to the NIVC title and winning tournament MVP honors...after coaching for several years, now makes her home in Milwaukee, Wis., selling real estate...Killebrew will not be able to attend the induction due to family obligations that weekend.

PAC-10 COACHES 2009 PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: Washington (90 points) was selected by the Pac-10 volleyball coaches to be the league champions in the 2009 preseason poll...poll order shows California (80), Stanford (74), UCLA (62), USC (60), Oregon (48), Arizona (42), Arizona State (34), Oregon State (31) and WSU (19)...the Pac-10 coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own teams (point system is 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2), have successfully predicted the league champion 13 of the last 20 years.
