Checking In With Denise Dy
Sept. 11, 2009
An All-Pac-10 honorable mention pick as just a freshman last year, all signs point to a great season two for Denise Dy. The sophomore is ranked 58th nationally in singles and 17th in doubles with Joyce Ardies in the preseason rankings, and last month she captured the Washington State Open singles title, defeating Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna in the final. McKenna is ranked 7th in the preseason rankings and won last year's ITA All-American Championships. Dy will be in both singles and doubles qualifying draws at this year's All-American event in early October.
GoHuskies.com: This summer you got a big win at the Washington State Open. You must have really been playing well throughout the week. What was working well for you during the tourney?
Denise Dy: Yes, I was playing well. One thing that was working well on my side was the fact that I was well rested and mentally prepared for the tournament, which is really important for me.
GH: Talk a bit about the final against McKenna. Obviously she's one of the top players in the NCAA. Did you believe you had a good shot going in? What was your strategy against her?
DD: Mckenna is a good player. She works hard, she is smart, and she doesnt give up. Period. When you play her, you have to beat her. I honestly didn't really think about how good my chances were, how well I can compete against her, or if I can beat her. I just focused on things I can control, which is me. So pretty much my strategy was to trust myself and focus on what I need to do against her to win.
GH: What does a win against a player with as much success as her do for your confidence going into the fall?
DD: My win against her just showed me that I can not only compete, but beat the top players in the country. It was a good win and I am hoping there are more to follow in the future.
GH: Did you go home at all during the summer or were you mostly in Seattle? What were some highlights of your summer?
DD: I went home for a week right after school ended. Otherwise, I was mostly in Seattle practicing, working on my fitness, working some part time jobs, and basically taking it easy before school started. The tennis season is hectic and I'm taking advantage of all the free time I have right now. I'm using the free time I have to read the pocket books I want, watch movies, catch up on one of my favorite shows, which is House, and hang around.
GH: You and Joyce are ranked 17th in the preseason rankings. Have you been able to work much with her this summer? How good do you think you guys can be with a full season together?
DD: Oh yes we are really excited. It is both our highest doubles ranking thus far and being that it is Joyce's last year, we want to take advantage of a full season together. She also stayed here for the summer so we have been working together.
