Four Golden Bears Represented in ITA Preseason Rankings

SKILLMAN, N.J. - The California women's tennis team had four players selected for preseason rankings in the Sept. 4 Campbell's/ITA Division I Women's Tennis preseason rankings. In singles, sophomore Jana Juricova topped the list with her personal high of No. 4; she finished 2008 as the No. 8-ranked singles player in the nation. A pair of juniors joined Juricova in the top 30 with Marina Cossou receiving the No. 18 ranking and Mari Andersson holding down No. 26.

As the reigning NCAA doubles champions, Andersson and Juricova opened the fall season as the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the country. The pair was selected for ITA All-America honors in doubles with Juricova also taking home singles honors. Both Andersson and Juricova were also named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team and took home ITA postseason honors. Andersson was selected as the ITA Northwest Region Player to Watch while Juricova was tabbed as the ITA Northwest Region Newcomer of the Year. Juricova was also the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.

Cossou also received a doubles ranking as part of a doubles team with incoming freshman, Nelly Radeva. Cossou was selected to the All-Pac-10 second team and received conference all-academic team recognition.

The three returning players helped the Golden Bears to their second consecutive runner-up finish in the NCAA team championship in May. Cal finished 7-1 in Pac-10 play for second place. In just her first year on campus, Juricova posted a team-high 39 singles victories (seven losses) and captured the singles crown at the Saint Mary's Invitational and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. Andersson completed her first season at Cal with a 25-6 singles mark and Cossou overcame injuries to log a 27-11 singles record in her second year.

The Bears open the fall tournament season as hosts of the Cal Nike Invitational, Oct. 2-4. Singles players and doubles teams from around the country will compete in the annual three-flight tournament at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. Please visit for more information and updates.
