No. 15 USC Gets Eighth Straight Win; Beats Utah Valley, 3-1
Sept. 11, 2009
OREM, Utah -- Senior All-America outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) had 14 kills, 13 digs and two solo blocks Friday as the No. 15 USC Women of Troy defeated the host Utah Valley Wolverines, 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 19-25, 25-19), at the Wolverine Invitational.
USC (8-1) was playing its second match of the day after a 3-0 sweep of Idaho State earlier this afternoon.
Alex Jupiter led the Trojans with 17 kills in the match. She posted 20.0 points with seven digs and four blocks (two solo, two assisted). Kimmee Roleder also was in double figures with 11 kills and a career-high 16 digs.
'It was a rowdy crowd tonight that got after us,' said USC head coach Mick Haley.
The Trojans got great production in the middle from Lauren Williams and Zoe Garrett. Williams recorded 11 kills and hit .474 (11-2-19) with four blocks while Garrett had nine kills and hit .500 (9-1-16) with four blocks as well. Sophomore setter Kendall Bateman ran another balanced offense again as the team hit .282 with Bateman notching 50 assists and nine digs.
'I thought our middles did a great job tonight,' said Haley. 'Kendall did a great job of setting them. I want to come back tomorrow and compete. I hope we are alert and willing to come back and fight.'
Camie Manwill led Utah Valley (4-3) with 14 kills and 17 digs while Kayli Broadbent added 15 kills.
At 22-22 in the first set, Jupiter recorded back-to-back kills and a Wolverine attack error gave the 1-0 match lead to the Trojans. USC held set point at 24-21 in the second before Utah Valley stormed back with three straight points. Jupiter and Garrett used kills to stop the momentum and give USC the 2-0 lead.
In set three, UVU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and kept the pressure on the Trojans. USC drew within three at 19-16, but the Wolverines earned the set victory. Jupiter started on the serve in set four and Gysin's solo block helped USC to a 5-0 lead at the start to lead the way for the Trojans' eight straight win this season.
Both teams will face each other again tomorrow in a 1 p.m. Mountain time match.
