Forbath Named Lou Groza Star Of The Week
Sept. 14, 2009
Place kicker Kai Forbath has been named a Lou Groza 'Star of the Week' after his impressive performance in Knoxville, TN over the weekend. Forbath is one of three student-athletes honored by the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nation's best kicker. This week's other honorees are Central Michigan senior Andrew Aguila and Georgia's Spencer Lanning.
UCLA rode the talented right leg of junior kicker Kai Forbath to a 19-15 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville Saturday, in a tough intersectional contest. Five times the Vols' stingy defense stymied Bruin drives, but Forbath delivered with field goals of 26, 39, 31 and 47 yards. His lone miss came from 51 yards - his first miss of a kick of 50 or more yards in 8 career attempts. It was an important win for UCLA, looking to turn the corner after last year's 4-8 record. One of those four wins was over Tennessee at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on an overtime field goal by Forbath.
Central Michigan senior Andrew Aguila's performance under pressure gave the Chippewas a 29-27 victory over the Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing last Saturday. Down 27-26 after missing a two-point conversion, the Chippewas' Bryan Anderson recovered Aguila's perfectly placed onside kick near midfield with 25 seconds left and gave Central Michigan another shot at an upset at Spartan Stadium. Two plays later, with just eight seconds remaining, Aguila connected on a 42-yard field goal to win the game. He also connected on kicks of 49 and 31 yards and added 2 PAT's for an eleven point day.
A PAT swatted away by a leaping Bulldogs defender spoiled a record-tying game for South Carolina junior kicker Spencer Lanning, in a wild 41-37 loss to Georgia in their SEC conference opener in Athens. Lanning tied a Gamecocks record with five field goals and pulled off a fake punt. A walk-on who earned the team's Special Teams award in the spring, Lanning connected from 21, 39, 22, 35 and 34 yards in what was a wide open game that took nearly four hours. The Lou Groza Award will be presented as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Florida on Thursday December 10th. The three finalists will be feted at the 18th Annual Lou Groza Awards Banquet on Tuesday December 8th at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
