Volleyball Comes up Short in Five-Set Thriller against Dayton
Sept. 18, 2009
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Despite taking the first two sets with ease, the Oregon State volleyball team (7-3) fell to Dayton in a five-set heartbreaker on Friday afternoon, 25-16, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 10-15, in the first match of the Michigan ADIDAS Invitational.
Senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) tallied a season-high 19 kills, followed by senior Lexie Rathgeber’s (White Rock, British Columbia) 10. Rathgeber also led all blockers with five.
The Beavers capitalized on Dayton’s nine unforced errors in the second set, while offensively, Rourke hammered five kills with Sambrailo adding four. Oregon State cruised to the easy first set victory behind long serving stints by Rourke, freshman Alyssa O’Neil (West Linn, Ore.) and junior Kiersten Sambrailo (Watsonville, Calif.), taking a quick 1-0 lead.
The second set had a similar rhythm taking an early lead and building it to as many as six at 15-9 behind the serving of junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba). Rathgeber led the Beaver offense with seven kills, catching the Dayton defense on its heels with her hard-hitting slides from the right side. The team found its block again, posting five in the set alone, helping take the 2-0 lead.
Dayton took the early lead in the third set, stringing together four points to take a 9-6 lead before building it to seven at 17-10. The Beavers battled back to within three at several points but were unable to come back, still leading 2-1 going into the fourth set.
Once again facing elimination, the Flyers took a slim early lead holding it throughout with the Beavers threatening within two, but Dayton held on to take the set and tie things at two all. The fifth set saw the Flyers take the lead again and capitalize on six Oregon State errors to come from behind for the match win.
Senior Camilla Ah-Hoy (Laie, Hawai’i) chalked up her sixth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 14 digs, while sophomore Betsy Devich (Kirkland, Wash.) dug a career best 20 balls, while setting a best five balls.
