WSU Tennis Successful on First Day of Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's tennis team had a successful first day of play at the 2009 Cougar Classic, competed at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In the crimson bracket of singles play, four Cougars advanced to the quarterfinals. Elisabeth Fournier won her first match against Ariel Ohno of Seattle 6-0, 6-0, then defeated Barbara Maciocha of Idaho in the second round 6-2, 6-3. Ksenia Googe beat Maddy Soule of Montana in the first round 6-4, 6-2 before advancing past Stephanie Jasper of Boise State and into the quarterfinals. Ekaterina Kamendova also advanced to the quarters with a win over Whitney Cheng of Seattle U in the first round and Constance Alexander of Montana in the second. The fourth Coug to advance to the quarterfinals was Liudmila Vasilieva, who beat Clare Dodge of Gonzaga and Lacey Pflibsen of Portland.
In the gray bracket of singles play, five Cougars won their opening matches and four advanced to the quarter-finals. Jessica Gomez beat Jessi Steele of Eastern Washington 6-1, 6-2. Erin Troedson won her first match as a Coug against Jennifer Coll of MSU 6-4, 6-2.
The Cougars advanced Marina Nicolas, Cara Brown, Gomez and Jackie Owens to the quarter finals.Nicolas won her first match against Tessa Mini of Portland 6-1 and 6-1. In the second round, she beat Ryann Warner of Eastern 6-4 and 6-2.
Brown won her first match against Gina Bloemers of Seattle University 6-2, 6-1 and beat Stephanie Fuchs of Portland 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance.
Jackie Owens won the first match of her collegiate career against Kylea Gleason of Portland State 6-1 and 6-0. In the second round, Owens beat Andrea De La Torre of Montana State 6-2 and 6-2.
Two doubles teams advanced to the quarter finals. In the crimson bracket, Liudmila Vasilieva and Elisabeth Fournier beat Molly Knox and Nayantara Vadali of Portland State to advance to tomorrow morning's quarter final match. Troedson and Nicolas also advanced to the quarter finals of the gray bracket with a win over Cara Lehman and Lauren Gibson of University of Montana.
In the Crimson bracket Kamendova and Googe won their first doubles match against Ariel Ohno and Whitney Cheng of Seattle University 8-3, but fell to Bran and Davidson of University of Montana in the second round 8-4.In the Grey bracket, freshmen Brown and Owens won their first match against Jennifer Coll and Andrea De La Torre of Montana State 8-5. Brown and Owens lost in the second round to Idaho's Jana Siwa and Natalie Kirch 8-2. Gomez and Andjela Kankaras also won their first match against Anya Dalking and Caitlin Stocking of Portland State 8-3, but lost in the second round to Clare Dodge and Gabrielle Verspieren of Gonzaga 8-6.
Play resumes tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
