Giles 67 Leads USC At Olympia Fields Second Round

Junior Matt Giles fired a 3-under 67 as the Trojans trimmed five strokes off their first-round total to move into fifth place after the second round of the season-opening 2009 Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Olympia Fields (Ill.) C.C.
Arizona State took over the lead at 17-over 577 (293-284) with Texas second at 21-over 581, Oklahoma State and Stanford tied for third at 23-over 583 and USC fifth at 25-over 585 (295-290). Four other teams are within two strokes of the Trojans.
Giles, a two-time All-American, recorded a four-birdie, one-bogey performance to move into a tie for fifth overall at 1-over 141 (74-67). Freshman Martin Trainer turned in another solid round and is now tied for 16th at 5-over 145 (72-73). He had three birdies on the day and was even before the final hole.
Freshman T.J. Vogel is tied for 29th at 8-over 148 (74-74), freshman Sam Smith is tied for 42nd at 11-over 151 (74-77) and sophomore Steve Lim is tied for 62nd at 16-over 156 (77-79).
