USC Wins Fourth Straight With 1-0 Shutout at Oklahoma
Sept. 20, 2009
NORMAN, OKLA. - The USC women's soccer team hauled in another shutout victory on the road with another game-winning goal coming from the feet of a Trojan freshman. In the ninth minute of action, Courtney Garcia knocked in an early score for USC, and the Women of Troy held on - despite playing a man down for the last 56 minutes of the game to claim a 1-0 win over host Oklahoma. Today's win over the Sooners means the Trojans bring back a 5-3-0 record and a four-game winning streak after this weekend's trip through Oklahoma. The Sooners go to 5-3-1 with the loss.
After picking up a 1-0 win at No. 21 Oklahoma State two days earlier on freshman Samantha Johnson's first-half game-winner, the Women of Troy were bound and determined to make it a road sweep in Oklahoma. The USC offense wreaked havoc up front to create several early scoring chances. In the ninth minute, the Trojan pressure broke through. Megan Ohai played the ball up to Marihelen Tomer who got loose on the right side. Tomer delivered a cross to the left post, and Courtney Garcia met the pass and drilled the score to lift USC to an early lead.
Ohai, Alyssa Davila, Ashley Freyer, Samantha Johnson and Tomer would all put Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire to the test in the first half as USC came close several times to adding to its lead. The Sooners pushed back in the 35th minute and charged the USC goal. USC defender Chelsea Buehning collided with the Oklahoma attacker outside the box, and as the last USC defender onhand, Buehning was issued a red card for the foul. Oklahoma's free kick was driven into the USC wall, and USC adjusted its back line soon after with Buehning off the field.
With 10 players left on the field after Buehning's red card, the shutout didn't come easily, but thanks to the versatile play of the Trojans onfield and goalkeeper Kristin Olsen dominating with six saves, USC turned away the Sooners' attempts to equalize. Oklahoma was able to generate an increase in shot attempts during the second half, but to no avail. USC's 1-0 lead remained solid to leave the Trojans in possession of their fourth straight win and a successful first road trip to Oklahoma. Olsen emerges with her second shutout of the trip, bumping the senior's career solo shutouts total to 22 to put her three away from tying as USC's all-time leader. Garcia's goal today is the freshman's second score and second game-winning goal.
USC now returns to California but remains on the road with a trip to Pacific and Santa Clara next week. The Trojans visit the Tigers in a 7 p.m. game on Friday (Sept. 25) and then play the Broncos at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 27).
