Cal Sets Fall Schedule

BERKELEY - The California softball squad is preparing for its fall slate of seven games, Cal head coach Diane Ninemire announced recently. The Golden Bears, who finished 38-20 last year, will play in seven games this fall, including four games at home, where they were 10-3 in 2009. Last season, Cal played in its 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament, which is the second longest streak in the nation, and advanced to the Super Regional for the fourth time since the format was adopted five years ago.

'Fall is a great opportunity for the newcomers to put on the Cal uniform and see what they can do,' Cal head coach Diane Ninemire said. 'It also serves as a great time for everyone to train and learn. Ultimately, we use it to helps us get where we need to be in order to have a successful spring season.'

The Bears start things off against Cal State Stanislaus on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field in Berkeley.

Cal will spend the weekend of Oct. 3-4 in Stockton, Calif., for a tournament hosted by Pacific. The Bears will face CSU Stanislaus in a rematch on Oct. 3 and 9 p.m., followed by UOP at 11 a.m. On the following day - Oct. 4 - Cal takes on Sacramento State (2:30 p.m.) and San Jose State (4:30 p.m.).

The Bears will then host nearby rival Saint Mary's on Friday, Oct. 16 at home at 4 p.m.

Cal will welcome two other teams - Sacramento State and UC Davis - for a round-robin-style tournament on Sunday, Oct. 25. CSUS will play UCD at 10 a.m., followed by a match-up of Davis and Cal at 12:30 p.m., and Sacramento State versus Cal at 3 p.m.

A key returner for Cal will be junior pitcher/ utility player Valerie Arioto, who earned a slew of honors last season - Easton All-American second team, Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American third team and All-Pacific first team, first-team All-Pac-10. Other All-Pacific Region first teamers Marrisa Drewrey and Jamia Reid will also come back for the Bears. Also returning are All-Pac-10 honorable mentions Vernae Sevilla and Shannon Thomas. The Bears will be joined by freshmen Jolene Henderson and Lindsey Ziegenhirt, who were named to the the EA Sports All-American team.
