IRVINE, Calif. - - In a wild back-and-forth battle, the Washington women's soccer team used some late-game heroics from a pair of seniors to defeat UC-Irvine, 3-2, in overtime Friday at Anteater Stadium for its third consecutive victory.

The Huskies, who won for the fifth time in six games, went ahead in the first half on a UC-Irvine own goal before the Anteaters came back to score twice in a two-minute span in the second half to take the lead. The match looked like it might stay that way until Veronica Perez was clutch once again to send it into overtime and then fellow senior Nikki Murray blasted in the game-winner in the second minute of overtime to help UW improve to 6-2 on the season.

UW took the lead in the 22nd minute when Alex Webber's shot was blocked by the goalkeeper and sent back into the field of play where it rebounded off a UCI defender and into the net for an own goal.

The Huskies led for the next 30 minutes but it took just two minutes for UC Irvine (7-2-1) to tie it up and then take the lead in the 55th and 57th minutes.

The Huskies scratched and clawed until the end, however, against a tough, physical Anteater team and as she always seems to do, the senior Perez made something happen when UW needed it most. The Huskies' leading scorer found herself with a break away and beat the UC-Irvine goalkeeper to send in the equalizer in the 88th minute.

With the momentum on their side, the Huskies then took control in the overtime and less than two minutes into the extra period, Murray fired a shot from 35 yards out for the golden goal.

The goal for Murray was her second of the season while Perez scored her team-high fourth of the year.

'Irvine is a physically tough team and they challenge you on every ball. It was our first true road game and they were 7-1-1 coming in so to beat a very confident team playing at home, that's a big win for us and I'm really proud of our kids. It was very warrior-like,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'We were getting chances the whole game and not doing anything with them and even when we got the tying goal, we didn't really have our act together. We were frazzled and fatigued, but that kind of lit a fire in them going into overtime and we singled Nikki out during the break. She gave up a couple restarts and she had some free kick chances before the overtime so we said, `do what you do best.' And she just got a hold of that one and you knew the second she teed it up it was going in.'

Sophomore goalkeeper Kari Davidson, who made two saves in the match, made a game-saving play for UW in the 70th minute. With the Huskies trailing 2-1 and UC-Irvine on a breakaway, Davidson came up with a diving save to keep the Anteaters from putting the game out of reach.

The Huskies out-shot the Anteaters, 10-5, in the match with Perez, Murray, Kelli Stewart and Alex Webber each firing two shots.

The Huskies continue their Southern California road trip on Sunday when they take on Cal-State Fullerton at 4 p.m.
