Stanford Football Live: Stanford vs. Washington
Sept. 26, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. -
First quarter (14:50 left): Stanford 7, Washington 0
Chris Owusu did it again. The Stanford sophomore returned the opening kickoff back for a touchdown for the second consecutive week. Owusu caught the ball at the 9-yard line and found a seam up the middle.
He completed the 91-yard play without being touched. It was the third kickoff return for a touchdown this season, tying a Pac-10 single-season record held by USC's Anthony Davis (1974) and UCLA's Matthew Slater (2007).
Though complete records have not been kept in that department, it seems likely that no Stanford player has ever accomplished the feat, none for certain in the past 35 years.
Owusu entered the game as the national leader in kick returns, averaging 52.8 yards per return.
PregameStanford returns to conference play in a game that will determine the early Pac-10 lead. Both Stanford (2-1 overall) and Washington (2-1) are 1-0 in Pac-10 play. Stanford opened its season with a 39-13 victory at Washington State, and Washington upset No. 3 USC, 16-13, in Seattle last week.
