Bobby Warshaw Named To The National Team Of The Week

Sept. 28, 2009

After leading Stanford to the Stanford/Nike Classic title over the weekend, Bobby Warshaw was named to the national team of the week. Warshaw has been a rock in the back of the Stanford defense that improved to 6-1-0 with a pair of wins over the weekend.

In the opening game versus Air Force on Friday, Warshaw scored a pair of goals to go along with his terrific defense. He opened the Stanford scoring with a successful penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1 early in the first half. He later scored Stanford's third goal that proved to be the game-winner. He took a Michael Strickland cross and converted a diving header, to make the score 3-1 in the eventual 3-2 Stanford win.

On Sunday, Warshaw led the Stanford defense to its fourth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over New Mexico. The Lobos entered the game with a 3-0 road record with all three wins coming over ranked teams. However, Warshaw and the Stanford defense shut down the New Mexico attack for their sixth consecutive victory.

Warshaw, who is also a Herman Trophy finalist, was moved to central defense this season after playing forward for most of last year. The move has been seamless as the Cardinal are off to their best start since 2002, a team that went all the way to the NCAA championships game, when they were 7-0-0 after seven games. also moved Stanford into the top-25 with their wins this weekend. The Cardinal are currently No. 25 in their weekly rankings, marking their highest ranking of the season.
