Cross Country Prepares for Bill Dellinger Invitational
Sept. 30, 2009
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State cross country team heads to one of its most prestigious races of the season in the fourth annual Bill Dellinger Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon, on Friday with the women’s race beginning at 3:30 p.m.
“This is one of the country’s top collegiate meets, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for this very young and inexperienced team to be put into this atmosphere early in the season, prior to the championship meets later on,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said.
The Beavers will race against three of the country’s top 13 teams in No. 2 Oregon, No. 5 Villanova and No. 13 Baylor. Also racing are Colorado State, Hawai’i, Portland, San Francisco, Texas-El Paso and Weber State.
Twelve runners will be competing for Oregon State, led by juniors Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.), who has been the top runner in both races this season for the team, and Abby Chesimet (Astoria, Ore.). Also competing are senior Jenny O’Connor (Newfane, N.Y.), juniors Kambria Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.), Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.) and Krista Stangel (Enterprise, Ore.), redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia), sophomore Cassandra Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.), redshirt freshmen Natosha Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash.) and Olivia Poblacion (Portland, Ore.) and freshmen Erin Jones (Hood River, Ore.) and Sandra Martinez (Yakima, Wash.).
“Abby Chesimet, Jennifer Macias and Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson are the only three in this group who were competing in meets of this caliber last year,” Sullivan said. “For the others, it is a first in a lot of ways, but there’s no better place or environment to do so. Each team competing is either ranked very high regionally or nationally, so it will give us a good idea of where we are with just over five weeks until the Pac-10 Championships and seven weeks to the NCAA Regional.”
Oregon took the women’s title last season with 23 points, edging out Arkansas by 37. Penn State, Wake Forest and BYU rounded out the top five.
