Huskies Safe And Sound In Michigan City
Oct. 2, 2009
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - The Washington football team continues its preparation for Saturday's game at Notre Dame with a relatively full day Friday.
Thursday, the Huskies held their regular Thursday practice in the morning before boarding the buses to SeaTac Airport for the three-hour, 45-minute flight to South Bend, Indiana.
It's an odd time-change situation for this trip as South Bend is on Eastern Time, but Michigan City, where the Huskies are staying is a part of the Central Time Zone, meaning that the stadium is three hours ahead of Seattle, but the hotel is only two hours ahead.
After touching down in South Bend, the buses drove the Huskies west about 40 miles to Michigan City, Indiana, on the south shore of Lake Michigan. The Huskies have stayed in this same hotel before, when they were here for their 2004 game against the Irish.
Friday's schedule includes a midday practice before a trip back to South Bend for a walk-through at Notre Dame Stadium.
On the way back, the team will stop for dinner and then hold meetings in the evening before bed.
Here in Michigan City, it's easy to forget you're in Notre Dame country, as in reality, you're about 40 miles west. Which, as has been well-detailed here and in the papers this week, is part of the point -- trying to keep the players' minds on business rather than all things Fighting Irish.
On the local television, most of the news centers around the city of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Here in Michigan City, tucked in between an area known as 'Michiana' and another called 'Chicagoland,' the pull of Notre Dame drops off some.
That's not to say it won't be (and feel like) a big game on Saturday. The 80,000 fans packed into the tight Notre Dame Stadium seats will see to that. As will the fact that the game is on nationwide television on NBC. That's one of the cool things about playing at Notre Dame -- your game is on over-the-air, national TV, a rare thing in this day when most games are on regional TV and/or cable channels.
