Corvallis, Ore. – Nearly joining the 30-kill club for the second time in her career, senior Rachel Rourke (Queensland, Australia) hit a season-high 29 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a five-set upset (25-21, 21-25, 10-25, 25-22, 16-14) of No. 7 Oregon in front of a record crowd of 3,576 in legendary Gill Coliseum Friday evening.

“I think we got the will to dig a few balls in that fourth set and blocked well tonight,” head coach Taras Liskevych. “The key was losing the third set and coming out and owning the fourth set. Rachel was unbelievable and unstoppable in that fifth set, hitting .780.”

Rourke earned her second double-double of the season adding 11 digs and six blocks. Her 34.0 points is a Pac-10 season high. Senior Camilla Ah-Hoy (Laie, Hawai’i) tallied her eighth double-double behind 50 assists and a season-high 19 digs. And junior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) terminated 18 balls, while sophomore Betsy Devich (Kirkland, Wash.) had a match-high 20 digs and senior Lexie Rathgeber (White Rock, British Columbia) had a match and season-high seven blocks.

The Beavers came from behind trailing through most of the first set before tying things up at 17 all, the fifth tie score of the set, before big kills by Sawatzky and a block by senior Lexie Rathgeber and Rourke built the lead to as many as three. Back-to-back kills by Sawatzky and Rourke put away the set in favor of the Beavers.

After falling behind in the second and third sets, Oregon State battled back in the fourth despite finding itself down until it was tied 17 all. Two blocks and an Oregon blocking error put the Beavers up 20-17, but the Ducks still found ways to hover with both teams trading sideout points. Senior Bree Knitter (Fallbrook, Calif.) finally put the set away with a big kill to tie everything back up 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, the Beavers went on a short surge to start to take an early 6-2 lead. Oregon battled back to take a small lead at 12-9, but a big block by Knitter and freshman Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) followed by big kills by Rourke. Coming into the match to serve at 14 all, freshman Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) helped the Beavers to back-to-back points to come from behind for the win with Ah-Hoy putting away the match on a solo block against Meyers.

Oregon’s Heather Meyers led the Ducks’ offense with 20 kills, while libero Kellie Kawasaki had 19 digs.

Oregon State improves to 10-5, 1-2 Pac-10 on the season, while Oregon falls to 11-2, 1-2 Pac-10.

Oregon State heads to the desert to face the Arizona schools next weekend. The Beavers will take on No. 18 Arizona first on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
