No. 11 Stanford Volleyball Sweeps No. 13 USC

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 11 Stanford women's volleyball team swept No. 13 USC, Friday in Los Angeles, 25-23, 35-33, 25-18. Stanford improves to 2-1 in the Pac-10 and 9-4 overall, while USC falls to 2-2 in the conference and 13-3 overall.
Junior Alix Klineman turned in another solid performance, posting a season-high 24 kills and 11 digs. Junior Cassidy Lichtman earned her fourth triple-double of the year with 12 kills, 13 assists and 14 digs, while senior Janet Okogbaa added nine kills, hitting .333 for the Cardinal. Junior libero Gabi Ailes recorded a season-high 30 digs, moving her from 10th to seventh place on Stanford's career digs list passing Stanford-great Logan Tom. The Cardinal hit .265 for the match and held USC to a .192 clip.
Stanford was down early to USC, 6-3, but two errors by the Trojans and a service ace from freshman Hannah Benjamin tied it at six. The set remained close as the score was tied seven times before USC jumped out to a 15-12 advantage. However, Stanford scored three straight points, earning kills from freshman Jessica Walker, sophomore Stephanie Browne and a block by senior Janet Okogbaa, to tie the set once again. Down one, Stanford posted four straight points, including kills from Okogbaa and Klineman, to take a 21-18 lead forcing USC to call timeout. The Cardinal would hang on to take the first set, 25-23. In total, the score was tied 12 times during the opening set.
Stanford fell behind early in the second set as USC registered four consecutive points to go up 9-6 before a kill by Klineman ended the rally. The Cardinal would use a run of its own to tie the set at 10, as Klineman added two more kills. As both teams searched for momentum, the Cardinal pulled ahead, 19-17, as freshman setter Karissa Cook dumped the ball over the net for the kill. The Women of Troy would put together a run of its own as they came back to tie the set at 22. Lichtman would register four kills, while Okogbaa downed two of her own as Stanford would fight off USC to win set two, 35-33.
The Cardinal jumped out to a10-4 lead early in the third, as Klineman recorded four kills and Okogbaa added three more. Two kills from senior Alex Fisher increased Stanford's lead to 13-7. USC would rally to pull within one, but another kill by Okogbaa would sustain the Cardinal lead at 17-15. Stanford would go on to complete the sweep with a 25-18 third-set victory.
Stanford returns to the Farm next weekend as it takes on Washington State, Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal will face the third-ranked Washington Huskies, Saturday, Oct. 10. First serve against the Huskies is slated for 7 p.m. and the match will be televised by FSN.
