Golden Bears Double Up at Cal Nike Invitational

BERKELEY - The No. 2-ranked California women's tennis doubles team of junior Mari Andersson and sophomore Jana Juricova earned a spot in the Gold Flight doubles championship match today (Oct. 3) at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in the 2009 Cal Nike Invitational. The tandem will be flanked by the team of freshman Tayler Davis and senior Kasia Siwosz, which earned a spot in the Blue Flight doubles final match.

Ranked No. 4 in singles, top-seeded Juricova advanced to the Gold Flight singles semifinal with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 68-ranked Micaela Hein of Arizona State. Juricova will be joined by fourth-seeded junior Marina Cossou in the semifinal round. The No. 26-ranked Cossou defeated sixth-seeded and No. 37-ranked Andrea Remynse of UCLA, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinal. No. 18-ranked Andersson didn't make it out of the quarterfinal round as she bowed out to third-seeded and No. 11-ranked Yasmin Schnack of UCLA, 6-0, 6-2.

In Blue Flight singles matches, the eighth-seeded Siwosz took out the two-seed in a three-set win over USC's Lyndsay Kintsler, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Davis needed three sets as well but got past Alisa Spitzer of Saint Mary's, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Top-seeded freshman Annie Goransson withdrew from the competition after suffering an injury.

Sophomore Catalina Visico got her first win of the year in a singles consolation match against Andrea Gaitan of San Francisco, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Nelly Radeva also claimed a win in singles consolation play as she defeated USC's Leyla Entekhabi, 6-4, 7-6(4).

In Gold Flight doubles play, Andersson and Juricova defeated Cristala Andrews and Valeria Pulido of USC, 8-2, in the quarterfinal round before taking out Pacific's Sasha Fisher and Jenifer Widjaja by the same score in the semifinal. The third-seeded and No. 12-ranked duo of Hein and Kelcy McKenna from Arizona State received a walk-over in the doubles quarterfinal as Cossou and Goransson withdrew because of injury.

Davis and Siwosz got their Blue Flight doubles quarterfinal win in an 8-0 blanking of San Francisco's Blaire Reed and Jessy Mekpoh. The two later claimed an 8-3 win over Maria Mizyuk and Emma Verbenne of Nevada in the doubles semifinal.
