What are your superstitions?
'I don't really have any big superstitions at all. More so when I was in high school. I had my lucky socks and things like that. I don't really have anything now. Collier Lawrence made us little ribbon bows on bobby pins, they are crimson and gray, and she gave us those before one of our big meets last year so I've been racing with that in my hair but I lost it so she made me one right before nationals. She was a huge inspiration to me and a great teammate and someone I look up to so I keep doing it.'
What are some of your pre-race rituals?
'I went through a big phase last season. I ate Peachy O candies after every single race. I think I'm Peachy O'd out a little bit. I still usually, kind of as a post race thing, have something sweet like ice cream or candy.'
What are your favorite pizza toppings?
'Chicken, spinach, artichokes. My boyfriend and I make this pizza with a garlic olive oil sauce instead of red tomato sauce. It's a garlic olive oil base with chicken and spinach. We tried sundried tomatoes but it didn't work. But at a restaurant I'd get sundried tomatoes.'
Who is your favorite TV show character and why?
'Chuck Bass and Blair Waldorf: Gossip Girl. I'm a huge Gossip Girl fan. I love Blair because she's Blair. I love her fashion, her hair, everything. I love Chuck because he's hot and he's a jerk. Which for some reason when it comes to TV character crushes that always seems to be it. Every TV character crush I've had is the hot, jerk. I also love Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother.'
Where is your favorite place to hang out in the Palouse?
'Amanda and Emily's backyard on their trampoline. We did it all summer. We did a campout for the 4th of July on the trampoline. We camped out girl style where we brought the TV out to the backyard with an extension cord and watched Top Gun. We hung out in their backyard a lot this summer.'
What is your top travel spot?
'A lot of the places I've traveled have been mostly for track. I never really traveled a lot when I was a kid and never really went anywhere that far. I did go to Morocco, but that was also for track. I think it would be really cool to go back over there because we really didn't get to see as much as I'd like since we were competing. We only got little outings with the team. I also just love Whistler. It's close to home and I've been there a million times. I just love the village, it's small and they have everything you need and it's outdoorsy and it's a great place to run.'
What is your favorite summer activity?
'I love just going to the beach with my sister. My sister and I would just have lazy beach days. She's even more enthusiastic about those beach days. Downtown Vancouver, the beach and shopping are right next to each other so we do beach and shopping days and get gelato.'
What class at WSU has been the most enjoyable?
'Sociology 150. That's going to contribute to the people I had in that class with me. There was a bunch of athletes in that class. I the title was Sex and Marital Relationships. It was just hilarious with the mix of people, the teacher and the content we learned altogether. For an extra credit assignment I went on a date with one of my teammates [Sam Stone] and then we analyzed our date in our paper for extra credit.'
What do you plan on doing when you graduate from WSU?
'I don't have any real concrete plans at all. My sister is teaching English in Japan right now and her contract goes through the end of July. When I finish up the track season I plan on flying out to Japan and living with her for a month. We're now talking about getting visas to work in Australia. We don't have any actual plans for that either. She's a zoology major and I'm a com major so we have to organize jobs but she said we don't need jobs, we'll just bum it and work in a restaurant or something. She says we'll just get work visas and figure it out. My sister and I, she's my best friend, we have no actual plans of what we really want to do and we're not at the point where we really want to settle down into any sort of routine. We're looking at the options of what we can do.'
What is your favorite sport to watch?
'I'm Canadian so I'm a hockey fan. Tonight is [the Canucks] opening game against the Calgary Flames! I'm a huge hockey fan. When I was growing up I watched a lot of junior hockey and liked watching the Vancouver Giants because the tickets are way more affordable than NHL ones.'
Who do you think is going to win the College Football National Championship?
'I have absolutely no idea. My first football game I've ever watched was here at WSU. I was looking at a American schools and the Super Bowl was on and I thought I should watch it. The Seahawks were playing that year. I had no idea what was going on, I sat there and did my homework with the game on. I still don't fully understand the game of football, but I enjoy the actual atmosphere of Cougar football when everyone is all excited. It's a social thing for me because I have no idea what is going on. I'm trying to learn and I'm figuring out some things but I don't know who the good teams are nationally.'
Who are you rooting for in the MLB playoffs?
'I don't watch baseball. My boyfriend is a huge baseball fan and he's a Cardinal's fan. I've also learned that if I cheer for the Yankees I seem to tick off a lot of people, so I tend to cheer for the Yankees. I don't really get the whole baseball thing. I enjoy going to Cougar baseball games because it is relaxing and somewhere to hang out in the sun and our team is pretty good.'
