USC To Run At Vanguard Invitational Saturday
Oct. 8, 2009
The USC women's cross country team will compete at the Vanguard Invitational held at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, Calif on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 9 a.m. The Trojans added the 5K race to their schedule in an effort to gain some momentum after struggling early in the season with injuries. The main opposition for USC at this meet is expected to come from Loyola Marymount, Biola and CS Fullerton.
'I think this is a good meet for us,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'We have added this race on to our schedule because the team has had a variety of injuries and illnesses and people are behind schedule. We are so young and the more race experience we can get, the better off we will be.'
Trojans expected to run this weekend are Zsofia Erdelyi, Bridget Helgerson, Christine Cortez, Katherine Ellis, Kelly Owen, Christy Ambrosini, Leah Gaeta, Zara Lukens, Theresa Kurth, Abigail Gregg and Allison Rojewski.
'The training has gone really well the last three weeks,' said Walsh. 'I'm just waiting for us to break out and have the race we are capable of having. Our goal is to take the team title, the individual title and to build some momentum heading into the end of the season and the Pac-10 Championships.'
'I have been particularly pleased with Helgerson, Cortez, Kathleen Moloney (not running this week) and Ellis as they have all have trained very well the last three weeks,' added Walsh. 'I'm looking for it to be a breakthrough week for them. Getting the course record and winning the race would be a good goal for Zsofia on Saturday.'
Azusa Pacific's Jacky Kipwambok set the meet record on a slightly different course with a time of 17:04 last season.
Next weekend the Women of Troy are scheduled to run at the 6K CS Northridge Invitational on Friday, Oct. 16 at 4:45 p.m.
