No. 2 Men's Golf readies for busy week on the road

Oct. 9, 2009

CORVALLIS - Coming off a team title in their season opener, the second-ranked Oregon State men's golf team travels to the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by California at the Meadow Club. The Beavers then travel from the Bay Area to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete at the Bank of Tennessee Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State, Friday-Sunday.

'The Alister MacKenzie always has a good field and we've had quite a bit of success there,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'We're excited to get back on the course and expect to play well.'

The Alister MacKenzie Invitational will feature a field of 15 teams including several top 50 teams - No. 22 San Diego State, No. 24 Oregon, No. 33 New Mexico, No. 42 Minnesota, No. 43 Colorado State and No. 50 California.

The tournament will be played at the Meadow Club, a 6,686-yard, par-71 course at Fairfax, Calif. It is a 54-hole tournament consisting of two 18-hole rounds played continuous Monday and a final round of 18 played on Tuesday. The Beavers are scheduled to tee off from the 10th tee Monday at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday's first tee time is set for 7:45 a.m.

'This is a course where length (off the tee) can help,' Watts said. 'The length that guys like Mike (Barry) and Morten (Madsen) hit should help their scoring. It's a tough course, all of the greens are elevated and undulated. So players will have to put the ball in the right area of the green to make their putts.'

Tackling the Meadow Club for the Orange & Black will be seniors Mike Barry, Paul Peterson, Diego Velasquez and sophomores Morten Madsen and Jonnie Motomochi.

'Although we've got a very experienced team, we've only got two guys (Peterson and Velasquez) that have seen this course before,' Watts said. 'It is a challenging course, but I expect our experience to be evident this week.'

The Beavers, who won their season-opening tournament nearly two weeks ago at the third annual Giustina Memorial Classic on their home course of Trysting Tree Golf Course, are ranked No. 2 in the nation by and are No. 8 in the country this week according
