Following the first day of competition at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate Diego Velasquez and the Oregon State men's golf team are in first place. The Beavers shot a 2-under par 286 while Velasquez leads the tourney with a 6-under 66 through the first 18 holes.

'The last three holes are tough and we gave a couple shots back,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'A few of our guys are a little disappointed in the finish, but overall the team played great golf today.'

The East Tennessee weather at the 7,147-yard, par 72 The Ridges Golf and Country Club offered a tremendous challenge throughout the day as the cold, windy and wet conditions played into the hands of the Orange & Black and led to the first round taking nearly six hours.

The weather couldn't stop Velasquez, who posted five birdies on the back nine including four straight on holes 13-16, as he posted a tournament-best 6-under par 66.

'It's a course you've never seen before and with these conditions you just go out there and hit it, and you can expect anything,' Velasquez said. 'You can expect it to be bad or good. I was glad I hit the ball really well and got it in the fairway, because in the rough ... it was bad.'

'Diego is playing great golf right now,' Watts said. 'He's hitting the ball really well. He sunk a couple longer putts today and that certainly helped his score, but most importantly he's playing with confidence.'

The day's only glitch came on the par 5, 10th hole when sophomore Morten Madsen carded an 11. Madsen, who was a team-best 3-under on the front side, didn't let that miscue effect the rest of his round bouncing back to finish the day with a 2-over 74.

'As a team we played really well today,' Watts said. 'But I'm particularly proud of Morten (Madsen) for bouncing back. He really took his mental game t a new level today. It shows signs of maturity that he finished on a good note, I'm not sure things would have gone the same a year ago.'

Jonnie Motomochi and Mike Barry are currently tied for 27th place with a 1-over par 73. Madsen is tied for 34th at 2-over and Paul Peterson is 40th at 3-over respectively.
