Oct. 16, 2009

MORAGA, Calif. - Three members of the California women's tennis team advanced to singles quarterfinal matches after the first day (Friday, Oct. 16) of the Saint Mary's Invitational at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex. All three Golden Bear doubles teams also advanced to quarterfinal matches. Sophomore Stephany Chang and freshman Annie Goransson each earned berths in the Red Flight singles quarterfinal while senior Kasia Siwosz pushed her way into the White Flight quarterfinal after dropping just one game in four sets.

Chang advanced out of the first round as Pacific's Julia Hansen withdrew due to injury. The fifth-seeded Chang then defeated Desiree Stone, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 16. Goransson blew by Sandra Florea of San Jose State, 6-1, 6-2, to draw the eighth-seeded Aleksandra Malovic of Washington. Goransson then bounced back after dropping her first set tiebreaker, 7-2, to earn a three-set victory, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, over Malovic.

Freshmen Nelly Radeva and Tayler Davis each won their first-round matches but fell in the round of 16. Davis got a 6-4, 6-2, win over Lacey Pflibsen of Portland before bowing out to Catherine Isip of Saint Mary's. Radeva defeated Santa Clara's Alexandra Zaniewski, 6-1, 6-2, before falling in a heartbreaking three-setter, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0. Radeva was narrowly edged in the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, before being blanked in the final set.

In White Flight singles matches, Siwosz blew through her first-round match as she eliminated Kerri Kummer of San Jose State, 6-0, 6-0. Siwosz was nearly as efficient in the round of 16 as she dispatched San Francisco's Alana McMahon, 6-1, 6-0. In the Blue Flight round of 16, sophomore Catalina Visico fought it out with Noelle Eades of UC Davis before falling, 7-5, 6-3.

Davis and Goransson teamed up in Red Flight doubles to earn an 8-3 win over Aileen Tsan and Maria Meliuk of Sacramento State in the round of 16. Chang and Siwosz also paired off to get an 8-1 victory over Melinda Akerbrant and Cecilia Gratian of San Francisco. In the White Flight, Radeva and Visico got together and defeated San Francisco's McMahon and Blair Reed, 8-5, in the round of 16.
