Cougar Rowing to Open Fall Season at Gonzaga

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State University women's rowing team will travel to Spokane to take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the Head of the Spokane, Saturday, Oct. 24.

The 2009 Head of the Spokane: Racing will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Gonzaga Boathouse on the Spokane River...the race is in 'head' format, in which the boats start at intervals, racing both the clock and each other.

About the Head of the Spokane: The Head of the Spokane is part of Gonzaga's annual Alumni Weekend hosted by the men's and women's crew teams, taking place Oct. 23-25...the race covers a 5,000 meter stretch of the Spokane River.

Last Year at the Head of the Spokane: Washington State captured four of six races against the Bulldogs. The Cougar varsity eight earned the fastest time of the day, 17:31, coming in 42 seconds ahead of the Gonzaga varsity eight. Finishing only two seconds behind the Bulldog varsity eight, the Cougar second varsity eight won its race with a time of 18:15. The WSU novice eight won its race in flight two, finishing 19 seconds faster than in flight one with a time of 21:26. The Cougar third varsity eight edged out Gonzaga by three seconds, finishing with a time of 19:03.

On Tap for Next Week: The Cougars return to the Palouse Friday, Oct. 30 to host the Head of the Snake Regatta at Wawawai Landing...WSU will compete against the Gonzaga Bulldogs...races will begin at 4 p.m.

Coaching Staff: Jane LaRiviere is in her eighth year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...the Cougars have raced in four NCAA Championships under LaRiviere, including a ninth place finish in 2008...she is joined by assistant coach Tara Medina, novice coach Corrie McGrath, and graduate assistant Crystal Culp...Medina is in her fourth year as an assistant, after coaching one year for Michigan...McGrath is in her second year at WSU, after coaching stints at Clemson and the University of Central Florida...Culp, in her second season, came to WSU after coaching in Canada and Michigan for three years.
