Bears Gear Up For Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team will head to Stanford for the 2009 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Regional Championship this weekend (Oct. 23-26) at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The four-day tournament will produce singles and doubles champions which will each earn berths to the 2009 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships from Nov. 5-8, in New Haven, Conn. Both the singles and doubles runners-up will also receive bids to the indoor championships.

Play begins with doubles round of 64 matches on Friday, Oct. 23, at 8 a.m. PT. Singles matches will begin at approximately 11 a.m. PT. In addition to host Stanford, the event will showcase players from the following ITA Northwest region schools: Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State.

The Golden Bears bring three ranked singles players to the tournament with each carrying one of the top eight seeds into play. No. 4-ranked sophomore Jana Juricova holds the top seed in the singles bracket; No. 18 junior Marina Cossou is seeded fourth; and No. 26-ranked junior Mari Andersson is the sixth seed.

The Cal trio is joined by 10 other ITA singles players with preseason rankings including No. 5 Hilary Barte of Stanford; No. 19 Venise Chan of Washington; No. 22 Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State; No. 55 Alexandra Poorta of Saint Mary's; No. 56 Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State; No. 58 Denise Dy of Washington; No. 63 Lindsay Burdette of Stanford; No. 67 Brittany Blalock of Cal Poly; No. 69 Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific; and No. 75 Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford.

In the doubles championship, the No. 2-ranked tandem of Andersson and Juricova holds the top seed. Cossou and freshman Annie Goransson are seeded fifth. The Bears will also field two other unseeded doubles teams. Sophomore Stephany Chang will pair with freshman Nelly Radeva; and senior Kasia Siwosz will team up with freshman Tayler Davis. Freshman Catalina Visico will join with Natalie Dillon of Stanford in doubles play.

The championship tournament features three other doubles teams with preseason rankings: No. 3 Barte and Burdette of Stanford; No. 17 Joyce Ardies and Dy of Washington; and No. 30 Amy Markhoff and Suzie Matzenauer of Cal Poly.

Last year, Bojana Bobusic advanced to the singles final and earned a berth to the indoor championships. Bobusic was joined in the quarterfinal by Cossou, Juricova and Claire Ilcinkas with Cossou advancing to the semifinal. Cossou and Ilcinkas advanced to the doubles semifinal together; while Juricova teamed up with Marion Ravelojaona for a spot on the other side of the doubles semifinal bracket.
