Women's Soccer Rallies to Stun No. 9 USC, 2-1
Oct. 23, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women's soccer team rallied for two goals in the second half to shock No. 9 USC, 2-1, in Pac-10 Conference action on Friday night. With the win, the first over the Women of Troy since 1994, Oregon State improves to 10-4-1, 2-2-0 in conference play, as USC falls to 11-5-0, 3-2-0 in league play with the loss.
'I could not be prouder of the team,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'The team fought extremely hard and did a great job of keeping possession and finishing their chances. It's a huge win for the program. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going when we play a terrific UCLA team on Sunday.'
USC got on the board first with a goal in the 14th minute. Off a pass forward from Carly Butcher, Marihelen Tomer fired a shot into the lower-left hand corner of the net to give the Women of Troy a 1-0 lead.
The Women of Troy held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, however, the Beavers seemed to refocus and tied the match eight minutes into the second half. In the 54th minute, a centering pass from Red Nixon made its way to Melissa Peck at close range. Peck knocked her shot on goal and USC goalie Kristin Olsen got her hands on it only to see the ball roll through for the tying score.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Oregon State continued to press and interrupt the Trojan play, earning a pair of corner kicks in the half and also setting up several free kicks for looks on goal. Oregon State finally broke through late in the half on a Nixon score to the low right corner to give the Beavers a 2-1 in the 76th minute.
The goal was the third of the season for Nixon as Chelsea Buckland was credited with an assist on the play.
USC was unable to get the equalizer as Ashley Wood and the Oregon State defense held the Women of Troy scoreless the rest of the way to pick up the victory. Wood made five saves in goal for the Beavers as Oregon State improved to 3-13-1 all-time against USC. Olsen made six saves in net for USC in the loss.
Oregon State held a 13-7 edge in shots as Buckland led the way with three shots for the Beavers.
Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, when the Beavers face No. 3 UCLA at 1:00 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.
