BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 16 Arizona Volleyball team fell to No. 15 California, 3-1 in front of 833 at the Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. Friday night.

The Cats, who entered Friday’s meeting riding a three match winning streak, couldn’t find enough defense as Cal’s Hana Cutura went for a career-high 31 kills on 47 swings in the Golden Bears’ win.

Early in the first set, Arizona went on a 5-0 run to grab a 11-6 lead.  Cal would respond though and eventually claw its way back to tie things at 19 all.  From there, the Cats would surrender six unanswered points and the Golden Bears would take set one, 25-19.

The duo of Courtney Karst and Whitney Dosty would team up for 12 kills and two blocks for 14 of Arizona’s 19 points.

Arizona bounced back though, claiming set two, 25-21 aided by Paige Weber’s 11 dimes, one block and one kill. After play was tied at 13 apiece, the Wildcats kept Cal at in arms length the rest of the set.  Middle blockers Jacy Norton and Stephanie Snow got in on the action in the second, both finishing successful attacks to propel Zona to the set win.

Out of the break, Arizona would not capitalize on its set two win though and would drop both sets three and four, 25-16 apiece.  Dosty and Karst would again team for double-digit kills but would not receive much help else where as the team would only hit .155 compared to .333 for the Bears.

Outside hitter Tiffany Owens finished the match with six kills on 40 swings while Weber totaled 39 assists. Dosty just missed her second straight double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 9 digs. Arizona last beat California in Berkeley in 2003.

Arizona will look to make good use of its “extra” day to prepare against No. 6 Stanford and try and earn a split to savage the weekend road trip.
