PALO ALTO, Calif. - Washington's talented twosome of junior Venise Chan and sophomore Denise Dy played their way into the quarterfinals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday, the first time UW has had two women reach the quarters in this event since 2003.

Hosted by Stanford at the Taube Tennis Center, the Regional tourney features many of the top women on the west coast, including full squads from Pac-10 rivals Stanford, California, and Oregon. Finalists in singles and the doubles champions from the 12 regions around the nation move on to the elite National Indoor Championships in November.

Also reaching the quarterfinals on Saturday was UW's top doubles team of Dy and senior Joyce Ardies, who took out Portland's Sporndli and Pflibsen, 8-3.

Chan, the nation's 16th-ranked singles player and the No. 3 seed here, had two straight-set wins to make the final eight. She rolled against Aileen Tsan of Sacramento State, 6-0, 6-2, then ousted Suzie Matzenauer of Cal Poly, 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 16. Chan has now gone one round farther than her previous best at this event and will play the No. 8 seed Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State today.

The 58th-ranked Dy faced two very tough opponents in a talented Cal freshman and highly-ranked St. Mary's veteran. In the round of 32, Dy held off Cal's Annie Goransson, who hadn't lost more than two games in a set, 7-6 (4), 6-2. The San Jose, Calif. native then bested the No. 7 seed, Alex Poorta, of St. Mary's, 6-2, 6-1. Poorta is ranked 55th nationally so Dy earned some valuable rankings points. She'll face Stanford's top player, 5th-ranked Hilary Barte, in the quarters.

In other action, Chan and senior Aleksandra Malovic stumbled in the doubles round of 16, losing 8-4 to Modoc and Petukhova of Fresno State. An illness to junior Lina Xu forced her to withdraw from her round of 32 singles match, as well as her round of 16 doubles match with sophomore Samantha Smith.
