Golden Bears Double Up at Wilson/ITA Regional

Oct. 24, 2009

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team completed the second day of the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship with five doubles teams headed to the round of 16. In the singles championship, four Golden Bears also earned spots in the round of 16 including freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt, who upended the top-seed, No. 7-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford, in three sets.

Konigsfeldt dropped the first set in his match, 6-4, before battling Clayton to a second-set tiebreaker where he came away with a 7-4 win. Konigsfeldt maintained control of the match and won the third set, 7-5, to upset Clayton and advance. Fourth-seeded junior Pedro Zerbini continued his run with a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory against Rainer Nachbauer of San Francisco; while sophomore Nick Andrews pulled out a three-set win over Nicholas Bjerke of Oregon, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, as one of the ninth seeds.

Junior Bozhidar Katsarov was the fourth Cal player to move into the round of 16 with his 7-5, 6-2 win against David Ayoun of Fresno State. Fellow juniors Zach Gilbert and Jonathan Dahan didn't fare as well, however, as each fell in two sets. Gilbert went the distance with Rikus DeVilliers of Fresno State before falling, 11-9, in the first-set tiebreaker; before coming up short in a 7-5 loss in the second set. Dahan was eliminated by Artem Gramma of Pacific, 6-1, 6-4.

In singles consolation matches, sophomore Sky Lovill dropped just five games on his way to two victories that put him into the round of 16 in the back draw. First, Lovill defeated George Anastopoulos of Sacramento State, 6-1, 6-0. Then he took out Nick Amaroli of UC Davis, 6-1, 6-3.

After a first-round bye, the fourth-seeded duo of Dahan and Zerbini got an 8-2 win over Amaroli and Tyler Lee of UC Davis. As one of the ninth seeds, Andrews and Konigsfeldt took out Alex Kotlyar and Peder Steen of San Francisco, 8-0, in the round of 64 before getting an 8-4 win against Sam Ecker and Greg Hirshman of Stanford. Katsarov and freshman Riki McLachlan took an 8-6 win against Fernando Mussolini and Stefan Simikic of Eastern Washington before upsetting one of the ninth seeds, Maxime Olivan and Lucas Tirelli of Saint Mary's College, 8-4.

Senior Bijan Hejazi teamed with sophomore Tommie Murphy to take out Matthew Kandath and Ted Kelly of Stanford, 8-3, in the first round. The two then defeated Kyle Dandan and Grant Fleming of Santa Clara, 8-5, to advance. Gilbert and Lovill gave the Bears five teams in the round of 16 as they upset the fifth-seeded duo of Alex Cornelissen and Marco Verdasco of Oregon, 8-5. The Cal tandem defeated Jackson Martin and Brian Thorp of Portland, 8-4, in the round of 64.

Play resumes at 8 a.m. PT on Sunday, Oct. 25 with round of 16 matches in both singles and doubles. For complete draws, results and schedules, please visit and search for tournament No. 5192914.
