Wharf Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Oct. 27, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Arizona soccer goalkeeper Devon Wharf has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week following her brilliant performance in goal in last Friday's 2-1, double-overtime victory over Arizona State.

Wharf, a senior from Mission, British Columbia, Canada, turned in one of the best performances of her career against the Sun Devils. She played every minute of the game and posted seven saves - a handful in spectacular fashion - including five in the second half and overtime periods.

Arizona, which defeated the Sun Devils for the second year in a row, collected its first win ever in Tucson over Arizona State. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following Alex Davis' goal in the 15th minute of the game.

Wharf and the Wildcat defense shut out Arizona State in the first half, but the Sun Devils came out attacking after intermission. The Sun Devils attempted nine shots in the second half. While Wharf turned away four shots on goal with impressive saves, but ASU was fortunate enough to sneak in the equalizer in the 86th minute.

The Sun Devils remained on the offensive into the first overtime period, attempting three shots. Wharf came up with her seventh save of the game in the 97th minute to keep the Wildcats in the game.

In overtime, Arizona reasserted itself and broke through with the game-winning goal. Alex Smith netted her first career goal on an over-the-head bicycle kick to give UA the 2-1 result.

The Wildcats (4-11-1, 1-4-0 Pac-10) will hit the road this week to take on the Bay Area schools. Arizona takes on California (8-5-1, 2-2-0 Pac-10) on Friday and league leader Stanford (15-0-0, 4-0-0) on Sunday.
